The Windrush generation are a unique group of people who have built their lives in the UK, contributing enormously to our country economically, socially and culturally. Neither I nor the Government want anyone to be in any doubt about their right to remain here.
Action has quickly been taken by the Home Office, which has set up a new dedicated team to help. The team will work across government to help people provide the evidence they need and will be tasked with resolving cases within two weeks of when the evidence has been provided. No one affected will be charged for the documentation which proves their right to be here.
The Home Office has also been engaging with charities, community groups and High Commissions to ensure people are made aware of this new service and a webpage has been set up (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/undocumented-commonwealth-citizens-resident-in-the-uk).
The Prime Minister has already met with Commonwealth leaders and I welcome her statement that "no-one with the right to be here will be made to leave".
