I am pleased with the progress we have made since 2010 to encourage more cycling and walking. Spending per head on cycling and walking has more than trebled since 2010, with almost £2 billion now being invested over the current Parliament through the Government's Cycling and Walking Investment strategy, along with additional investments by local councils and metro mayors.
In the run-up to the forthcoming Spending Review, I recently wrote to the new Transport Minister about funding generally, and also the possibility of ring-fenced funding for local authorities to prepare their LCWIP. I know that Central Bedfordshire Council is drafting its own LCWIP, which I welcome.
You can read the reply I received from the Minister below and am pleased to note his comment that he will be making “strong representations in the forthcoming Spending Review for the future funding of cycling and walking projects”.
