I have received a number of emails from constituents who have signed the ‘Keep Our NHS Public’ petition about the NHS and international trade once we have left the EU.
I am extremely proud of our NHS and the role it plays in ensuring that no-one is denied medical treatment because they cannot afford it. The Government has been repeatedly clear that the NHS will never be on the table in any trade negotiations, and this was reiterated by the Health Secretary in yesterday’s debate on the Queen’s Speech:
Let me be completely clear: the NHS is not, and never will be, for sale under this Conservative Administration. The Prime Minister made it abundantly clear and the President made it clear: the NHS will not be on the table.
In the EU trade agreements to which our country is currently party, the NHS is protected by specific exceptions and reservations. Outside of the EU, rigorous protections for our NHS will be maintained and included in any future trade agreement to which our country is party.
