Alistair Burt, MP for NE Bedfordshire, joined Bedfordshire County Scouts at Gilwell Park on Saturday afternoon, to get a flavour of a County Camp and meet Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders.
Alistair said; “I am a big fan of both the Scout and Guide movements, and know just what value they continue to bring to our young people and to communities. The opportunity to come down to Gilwell, get thoroughly muddy, and see just what activities have been going on was too good to miss.”
Alistair and Eve were shown round the camp by Gerry Pope from Biggleswade District, and after seeing kayaking, laser pigeon shooting, quad biking, go karting, climbing walls and high walks, they stopped off for a warm welcome and a cuppa on the Arlesey Camp site, for a chat with the adult team and some of the older Scouts.
“Scouting gives boys and girls such a broad range of opportunities and experiences, and that sense of adventure that we don’t always get from school or home. More Leaders are always needed to ensure that all children that want to join get the chance, and I would encourage anyone to have a go and visit their local Scouts or Guides with a view to getting involved. You really won’t regret it.”
