LABOUR’S FIRST WEEK CAMPAIGNING BRINGS CONCERNS TO NE BEDFORDSHIRE.

‘LEAKED MANIFESTO EXPOSES RASH POLICY AND RISKS TO THE ECONOMY’ SAYS CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE ALISTAIR BURT

‘It has been a bad start to the campaign for Labour. After senior policy makers failed to convince the public that they knew how their policies added up, the leaked manifesto exposes two things that should alarm those who live in NE Bedfordshire. Firstly there is chaos at the top of Labour, with a fierce war between Jeremy Corbyn’s supporters and many senior candidates. This is no way to approach governing Britain at a crucial time.

Secondly the raft of trade union dictated and sponsored policies (trade union Unite agreed on 8th May to donate up to £4.5m for Labours general election campaign) is contained in a manifesto with a potential £45bn black hole, being rejected by a number of Labour candidates and described as ‘childish’ by one. I am waiting to see how many Labour candidates use their Leader’s photograph to persuade people to back them.

In contrast Prime Minister Theresa May continues to govern the country, and set out policies for all the people, properly costed and achievable, with further improvements to mental health provision, capping energy bills and increased social housing having been announced this week.

The current international cyber-attack, which has included our NHS amongst many other targets world-wide, is being responded to through the National Cyber Security Centre, which this Government set up, and which is helping the NHS respond to the attacks and protect patients. The Conservative Government’s national security team includes the Prime Minister and Home Secretary Amber Rudd. If Labour wins the election, that team will be led by Jeremy Corbyn and Diane Abbott.

NE Bedfordshire has been offered very little by Labour this week in terms of a credible approach to the challenges facing the nation ahead. It deserves better, which I and the Conservative team will work hard to deliver.’

Rt Hon Alistair Burt

Conservative candidate, NE Bedfordshire
